Congratulations to Lily Jones and U15 Severn Stars for winning gold at the first School Games. They beat Manchester Thunder yesterday to meet Mavericks in the final today.
We are delighted to have two girls representing two franchises in the National Performance League tournaments in Nottingham over the weekend. Anya played for U21 Team Bath and Lily played for U17 Severn Stars.
Congratulations to Lily Jones who has been awarded the Norman Family Shield. Lily has had an outstanding season not only in the Under 16 Team Jets Squad but also the Under 17 Severn Stars Squad. Her dedication to all her netball training which includes travelling to the UK once a month to train as part of the Under 17 Severn Stars Hartbury NOVA Academy is fantastic.
The trophy was presented at the PwC Presentation Ceremony today by Mrs Norman who is an Honorary Life Member of the JNA. Her family have been connected to the JNA since its inception in 1944. Also photographed below as Lily's parents (left), Mrs Jackie Norman, Mr Leslie Norman and Mr Len Norman. Congratulations to all the players who have been part of the 2017/2018 PwC Academies which train on a Saturday morning and are feeder groups to the Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 Island Squads. Certificates to confirm players participation in these groups were presented by Abigail McDermott and Chris van den Berg from PwC. Thank you to PwC for their continued support of our Academies. This season they were run as Talent, Satellite and County Academies though this will change to age banded sessions from next season. Those players involved in the Under 14 and Under 16 Squads were also presented with Trophies for their individual performance and contribution to the teams successes and NSW Runners Up Trophies as both teams finished 2nd in their respective Leagues.
Lily Jones has been attending training once a month for U17 Severn Stars Hartbury NOVA academy. Severn Stars is one of the superleague franchises and talented Lily has worked very hard to earn her place on their franchise pathway.
Lily Jones took part in the first Severn Stars Supernova U17 tournament last weekend, with all 5 Nova academies, being Somerset, South Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Worcestershire. Lily played for Gloucestershire, who won all of their games and as such won the tournament! The tournament is designed to form the basis of selection for the Severn Stars U17 squad 2018/19, with a number of independent selectors assessing each game. They have selected 19 girls from the tournament to trial this Thursday including Lily, together with 8 of the current U19 squad who are also eligible for U17's. We are all very proud of Lily and how hard she has worked and all she has achieved this season. She has been a key member of the U16 Team Jets squad and is a fantastic role model for the other girls. Everyone at Jersey Netball wishes Lily the best of luck in her final trial. Team England, along with England Netball, have today announced an experienced netball squad for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia.
The squad includes Geva Mentor who will represent England at her fifth Commonwealth Games, Jade Clarke who will compete at her fourth games as well as captain Ama Agbeze, Eboni Beckford-Chambers and Jo Harten who will compete at their third Games respectively. The team known as the “England Roses” finished in fourth place at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and have won three bronze medals since the sport was introduced to the Games in 1998. Team England’s netballers head into the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the back of some of the best results in the team’s history with victories over South Africa and New Zealand helping them to their best ever finish in the prestigious Quad Series. At the 2018 Games Team England have been drawn in Pool B alongside New Zealand, Malawi, Wales, Scotland and Uganda. England captain Ama Agbeze said “The Commonwealth Games is a pinnacle event in the netball calendar; with all the top teams in the world in attendance. Our team have been steadily building to this point and we aim to return England’s best result since netball’s inclusion in the Games of Kuala Lumpur in 1998. We understand that this will be no mean feat, with the Games being in Australia; with its close proximity to New Zealand, both the number 1 and 2 ranked countries will have plenty of support on the ground. It is an exciting opportunity and we are relishing the challenge.” Jade Clarke said “It’s a really amazing feeling to be selected. The competition for spots was fierce this year with so many players in great form. I’m just as excited about my fourth CWG as my first! Representing Team England with the other sports and being in the village together makes the whole experience extra special.” Natalie Haythornthwaite added “To be selected for my first ever CWG feels absolutely incredible. It’s something I’ve dreamt about for years and to actually be able to say I am going to a CWG is amazing. I still keep checking it’s actually happening – not just a dream! I am so honoured to have been selected and I cannot wait to see what we can all do out there in April.” Head Coach Tracey Neville said “I think over the current international calendar all players stepped up in performance and there were some tough decisions made in selection. The 12 athletes selected offer us versatility, strength in particular court areas and units, and a wealth of experience with players who can lead the team from the front.” Congratulations to Abbie Le Marquand who has been selected to play for U19 Severn Stars today against Team Bath and London Pulse in the opening round of the NPL Leage.
The team lost against Team Bath 40 v 43 and also against London Pulse 28 v 59. Lily Jones who is part of our Academy Training Group and Under 16 Team Jets Side also trains in the Severn Stars Under 17 Nova Academy and is really enjoying the sessions. Well done to Lily.
