Jenny Le Cocq (photographed left) has dedicated over 44 years to both her Netball Club St Saviours and the Jersey Netball Association. Her passion for umpiring has meant she has dedicated many hours to encouraging and mentoring new umpires and leading courses and sessions to ensure a fresh supply of newly qualified umpires for our Association.

Jenny first joined St Saviour’s Netball Club in 1974 as a player but within a couple of years she was already assisting with the administrative side of the club and representing the club at meetings. By 1977 she was one of the main people running the Club. With a growing interest in the Jersey Netball Association and its workings, Jenny became the JNA Honorary Secretary for the 1987/1988 Season. She then took her first stint as JNA Umpiring Secretary for the 1994/1995 Season and was re-elected to the post from 2013 – 2015. Illness then prevented her from standing again.

After picking up a whistle Jenny passed her C Award in 1986 and although she was still playing she continued to dedicate her time to umpiring and gained her B Award in 1990. With St Saviour’s Head Coach and Chairwoman moving to the UK she then had the option of umpiring at Regional level with a friend to stay with to keep costs low. As a result Jenny became the First A Award Umpire in the Channel Islands in 1996. In fact Jenny was the only Channel Islander to obtain this level until August 2018. With studying commitments taking precedence from 2002 for her work, Jenny had to stop travelling to the mainland to umpire and so focused more on local umpiring, mentoring and assessing up to level B (qualified October 1999). Since qualifying back in 1986 Jenny has always given up her time to umpire at local tournaments and for the local Senior, Mixed and Youth Leagues. Injury and ill health did mean a break and Jenny now no longer umpires the top flight, however she continues to be heavily involved in helping new umpires to start their umpiring journey, whilst also umpiring the Winter League at Second and Third Division Level; Always carrying a metre stick to help understanding of obstruction!

Jenny has also turned her hand to coaching. As one of the coaches of the St Saviour A team during the 1992/1993 season. Since then Jenny has helped out when needed with her club and also has been a regular helper at Back 2 Netball Sessions since it was added to the Jersey Netball Associations Programme of courses in 2012. This is a general helper, assistant coach and umpire. After completing her Level 1 Course in 2015 Jenny did a year with Mont Nicolle Primary School Netball and also has taken on more coaching within her club and at Back 2 Netball. Jenny also completed the Walking Netball Host in August 2018 and has helped out at some of the sessions held to date.
Jenny is still a very active member of the Jersey Netball Association and is always on hand to help with umpiring queries and questions. Her passion and dedication to our Association is fantastic and it is for this reason that we nominate her for this Long Service Award.

Following a forced early retirement from playing with the early onset of Arthritis at only 30 years of age, Jackie Nelson was encourage to become and Coach. It is a role she has passionately undertaken with great success to date with her club St Lawrence, to whom she moved in 1991, and also at an County Level.
Jackie became one of the netball coaches at First Tower School from 1992 where her 3 daughters attended. And along with her fellow coach started coaching the Jersey U11 Squads the following year. She was involved with the U11 age level for 6 years and since then Jackie has coached various different age groups at Island level and has been the Over 30s coach for the last 2 years.
Due to the commencement of the U11 teams and training programme, Jackie along with her fellow Island Coach Linda Andrews set up the Jersey Junior Netball Programme offering weekly training to the best netballers in the Island. This then became the Performance Academy and still runs today. Furthermore they set up the Youth League in 1998 which allowed those from 12 – 14 play in a league for their own age group before they then moved up to Senior League.
Jackie was also elected as President of the Jersey Netball Association in July 2007. During her five years in the role, Jackie – who stepped down from the post in 2012 – played an instrumental part in orchestrating the JNA’s move indoors to Les Ormes. Previously, the JNA had held all of its games outside – first at FB Fields and then Les Quennevais. However, many players became disillusioned with a sport ill-suited to the open air and quit. Fortunately in 2010 4 Indoor Courts were secured at Les Ormes and it has allowed a huge development in the level of netball on the Island since.
Jackie has also continued to hold roles within the JNA Management Committee. She has been the Results Secretary since July 2015 taking on the role again this season in an unofficial capacity when no one else came forward and creating fantastic match reports for our Senior Winter League. She has also been the JNA Winter League Umpiring Secretary since July 2015. She has dedicated many hours and careful planning to rearranged matches and when umpires have been unable to fulfill a fixture.
It is through St Lawrence Netball Club that Jackie began a 15-year association with the Nairobi Slums School Projects Trust, playing her part in helping the charity’s founder and St Lawrence netball umpire Gill Bell, to raise the money to build a school in the slums of Nairobi.
Jackie Nelson has dedicated a huge amount of time to netball and has passed on her passion of the game through her coaching. She has been instrumental in the development of Jersey Netball to the standard that it is with her involvement in the commencement of new initiatives especially for young players. It is her dedication to development which means we are nominating her for this Long Service Award.
